tonight i walked outside and saw the first fireflies of the spring, doing their blinking dance in the yard. instead of standing and watching them, as i always do, entranced, i hopped in the car with my housemate and we sped off to the liquor store before it closed. we made it, just barely, and by the time we returned the fireflies were gone. there will be plenty more spring and summer evenings filled with fireflies, but the first night i saw them i thought i had more important things to do.
