i was raised by a group of people who considered science fiction and fantasy literature the most wonderful and important part of their lives. my heroes were always authors, books my best friends. the authors i grew up reading are getting old now, and we keep losing them. today it was sir arthur c. clarke, best known for 2001: a space odyssey. my favorite of his works is a short story called the nine billion names of god. it's in this book i'm holding and i've reread it three times this afternoon.
